Soccer Mom

Soccer Mom

Today certainly hasn’t gone as planned.  After getting the kids off to school,  I found myself phoneless.  Which is a weird feeling.  I was thankful that we still had our landline or I would have felt cut off from the world.  Drat technology anyway!

Instead of my normal routine, I had to make an emergency trip to town to fix said phone.  And in the process, guess what color I ended up dressing in…gray.  Gray like the skies have been for days.

So I color failed today.  And it got me to thinking about how to reset and prepare for what may be ahead for the rest of the week.

One area that I find myself struggling with is soccer.   What should a soccer mom wear?  Clearly no one wants to be the mom on the sidelines in sweatpants or worse…pajama pants.  Please no!  But with Iowa springs, one is never sure what the temperature will be on the soccer fields.  What can seem nice can be quickly deemed miserable on the sidelines of a game.

So here are a few ideas for some colorful soccer mom outfits.  Nothing elaborate.  So when you’re rushing out the door on Saturday morning and need some quick and easy options you won’t end up gray and miserable.  That will just be the sky.

Color Inspiration

I am not afraid of color.  Maybe that should be written in color.  I am not afraid of color.

You too can say this.  Yes black can be slimming.  Yes many artists wear black.  But black can also be a prison.  Are you a red head?  Chances are black is not your most flattering color.  Or if you’re fair, black can wash you out.

If you’ve read this blog long enough, you’ll know my affinity for white.  It isn’t that I never wear black, but it is probably the color I wear the least.

For a long time, I thought black clothing was saturating the market.  But now I’m starting to see the color creep in.  Why?  Because if you have bright blue eyes and you wear bright blue, your eyes are gonna sparkle like crazy.  Color can be flattering.

It can also be an amazing mood boost.  Case in point, this week’s dreary rainy days.  If I lived in Seattle, I’d be packing my closet with color.  Imagine the difference of putting on a bright yellow dress versus a black one.  I think you’re going to feel different.  I think you’re going to walk into a room differently.

Do I have you convinced?  Maybe you’re ready to break into something colorful but not sure how to do it.  This week, I’m showing you how to wear color.

Color Inspiration

Here are three examples of colorful outfits.

Outfit one has the most color.  This is when you’re feeling very adventurous.  But it is not difficult!  Take a bright skirt with a pattern and pull a color from the skirt and wear it on top.  Sure this skirt would look great with a white or black top, but a colored top creates something more!

Outfit number two is a basic- easy printed top with jeans.  Take a look through what you’ve worn lately.  Was it all jeans paired with solid tops?  Throw a colorful pattern into the mix!

The last outfit is your basic jeans and top look.  This look is so easy but it won’t come across that way.  Match the brightness of the blue top with white jeans.  They’ll make that color pop instead of dull it down with blue jeans.

These are baby steps into color.  I’ll show you more ways to wear color tomorrow and help brighten your week!

The Forecast Looks Bleak

Silly wind

I think we’re on day 30 or something of crazy, miserable wind this spring.  I have come to the conclusion that wind is the one type of weather I cannot stand.  Bring on the polar vortex but save me from the clear-off-the-patio, watch-out-for-the-basketball-hoop and glue-down-the-shingles wind.  This wind is SILLY.

This week’s forecast is terrible.  Wind, rain and clouds with some added cool temps. Pretty much nap weather all week.  How are we going to keep a positive outlook?

My suggestion.  Color.

According to Instyle Magazine, 86% of their readers felt a mood boost when wearing a vivid hue.  That’s a pretty high percentage.  My challenge this week is to leave the black at home and throw on some color.  Let’s see if we can power through this forecast with some sunny hues.

Check back for how to wear color and color inspiration this week!

TV Stand Re-redo (Part 2)

Remember yesterday I was posting my progress converting my purple/grey TV stand into a color that I love.

You know sometimes it takes awhile to find your own decorating style.  You see something you like in a friend’s home or on Pinterest but when you add it in to your own home it looks out-of-place?

I think I’m finally seeing the end result of transforming my home since our move.  I wish I could say that we have new blinds or new flooring or new lighting.  But I’m patient. And my kids are doing a number on all the things we own anyway.  Having nice things and having kids doesn’t always add up…

What I mean is that I’m finally starting to see my personality and style coming through in our home.  For example, this TV stand.  The choice of color is definitely me.  It might be way too bright for someone else’s taste.  But I love it.  And I’m finding that my style is becoming more fun and joyful as I get older.  It’s less about looking like a subdued furniture store where everything matches and more about life and color and a story.  Eclectic.

Wow.  That was a long intro to the final steps on this piece.  But of all the furniture in our home, this one really speaks to my style.

Here is where we left off-

Lightly Sanded

I had just slightly distressed my paint job.  And most people would have stopped there. But I had a particular look in mind for this piece and my next step was painting some white on the front drawers-

The white was simply to add another dimension to the front.

And then…I broke out the power sander.  I only used it on the drawers.  This gave them a much more distressed look with places of fading from white to blue to grey.

Lastly, I topped the whole piece with a tinted wax so it would have a darker finish.

Here is the result-

It has so much personality now.  And it feels like a great pair of worn in blue jeans.  I think the dresser is happy with itself.

Which is your favorite?  Grey or blue?

TV Stand Re-redo (Part 1)

I painted the bottom of a VERY dated hutch awhile back to give it new life as a TV cabinet. I spray painted it because it was such terrible particle board and I was afraid I’d have to paint it multiple times.  The paint I used was a grey.  But after I brought it into the house and put it in its place, the grey looked a little purple.  Not so happy with the purple twinge.

So I knew it would only be a matter of time before it got another facelift.  This time the grey served as a base for the distressing process.  So I got to painting.

I chose a very happy and bright old pickup truck blue.  And I purchased it in a latex based paint.  After I painted the whole stand, and before it dried significantly, I lightly sanded the edges of the front, to reveal some of the grey.

Then I let it dry completely.

Sofa Table Redo

I bought this little sofa table online last winter.  And it sat with a tablecloth covering it for quite some time.  Until I could get around to painting it of course!

Here is what it looked like when I picked it up-

Table Before

It was a dark cherry finish circa 2000.

I finally stopped my procrastinating and gave it a good sanding and because it was so dark and not made of wood, I primed it-

Now the biggest dilemma, what color to paint it?  I decided to go with my favorite…white. Simple, goes with anything, pops.  Yup.

Lastly, what was I going to do with those brass maple leaf drawer pulls?

Maple Leaf Pull

I could paint them but I’m just not a fan of the maple leaf.  So, new drawer pulls it is!

These are the drawer pulls from Hobby Lobby I’d like to use.  But I wasn’t terribly excited by the green color.  I think a little paint will do the trick-

What do you think?  Better than before?

Around the House

Who wants to see a few little medleys around my house this week?

I’ve been busy, as per usual.  I’m working on switching closets and its a FULLtime job around here.  I’m a little jealous of people who experience no seasonal changes.  Just when you wash and put the snowpants away, they come right back out.  I think my boys’ coats are going straight in the garbage.  No one is going to use these coats that have already seen two tough winters.  There is dirt that can’t be identified on these coats.

But to not have to pack away any of that!  Totally jealous right now.

Meanwhile, I’ll be on the journey of switching closets.  I wish I could say I had a great system for this.  But that would involve installing a dumb-waiter in our home to haul totes up and down from the basement.  Now that would be slick.

Why does this process take so long?  Kids keep growing.  Last season’s summer things are too small.  So I have to find the next size up.  And then I have to pack away the previous size.  And then I have to save at least one size in-between for hand-me-downs for the next child.  That’s just the clothes.  Then there are shoes, coats, hats, cleats, etc. Take this process times three.  Sound exhausting?  It is.

As I am busy putting the house through turmoil, I’ll divert you from all of that with projects!

For a little preview of projects to come-

I’ll be detailing the before and afters of this little project tomorrow!

Until then you can find me up to my eyeballs in clothing!

Happy Easter

I hope you had a wonderful Easter.  I enjoyed spending time with my family and also enjoyed seeing a packed church.

It’s so amazing that Jesus defeated sin, death and the devil for all of mankind.  We can rest in the promise that there will only be one death, one time to say goodbye and will awaken in an eternity we can only imagine.  And thanks to the sacrifice he made.
