State Fair

I’m embarrassed to say this, but I’ve lived in Iowa for cumulatively twenty years and I’ve never been to the state fair.  Criminal, I know.  I’ve heard so many great things about it.  And I’m excited to attend my first ever this week.
Here’s some ideas on what to wear.  A few outfits for those extreme hot or humid days in the sun. And also for a nite out at a concert.
Oh, and did I mention the boots are optional?  If you’re gonna get a pair of good lookin’ boots, you might as well get your wear out of them!  But don’t be fooled.  Real cowgirl boots don’t look as um, neat? as these.  But it’s fun pretending!

Summer Style- From Polyvore to Real Life #24

Now that my life has settled down a bit, I promised you I would write a few garage sale tips for those of you considering going down that road.
1)  Don’t make people dig.  Clean your items and have them set out where people can find them.  Only the true treasure hunters (people like me who are willing to get dirty looking for a “find”) will scavenge for a buy.  Most people need it right under their nose.
2)  Don’t have a few tables worth of items.  Find someone to go together on a garage sale with or sell the items at a different venue.  People don’t want to make a stop at your home for a handful of things.
3)  Selling personal hygiene items screams grandma!  Sure, there probably is someone out there that could use that half used bottle of lotion you don’t care for, but selling it on a garage sale not only is tacky but creeps most of us out.
4)  This is a DUH suggestion but seasonal items will sell better if they are closer to the season.  Selling Christmas stuff in July can be more difficult than selling it in say, September.
5)  Generally speaking, keep your prices low and reasonable.  You aren’t out to send the kids to college on your garage sale money so just get rid of it!  If you have items that you need serious dollars for, you are better off putting them on Craigslist or eBay. Not too many people go garage saling in the hopes that they buy precious gems, just simple treasures.
This outfit I wore to church and it was a hurried morning!

Summer Style- From Polyvore to Real Life #22

This outfit should really be called Sweat-tastic.  Because that’s pretty much all I did in this.  What began as a strangely cool and rainy morning turned into a sickening humid and hot afternoon.  I think I was a pool of moisture.
Thank goodness for the breeze or I may have become a puddle on the driveway!

Eek gads.  Sometimes there are just days when you don’t take a good picture.  In this outfit, I was headed to a matinee with my kids.  It seems that summer is still struggling with an identity crisis of late and I have to dress for any weather, any time.  So while I thought it would be warm enough for shorts, I also added a blazer just in case the movie theatre was subzero.
Summer take note, you have my permission to officially warm up now.  Thanks.

Summer Style- From Polyvore to Real Life #4

This weekend is all about soccer, soccer and more soccer.  And the weather isn’t cooperating at all.  One minute it is sunny and hot, the next raining and cold and when you are miles from the car and home, how do you prepare?
Wear layers.  Bring blankets and extra jackets.  And don’t forget the umbrella.
I prepared for the rain and cold by starting with jeans.  Then I added a tank in case it really heated up but I threw a short-sleeved sweater over top for that mid-range temp.  In this mud, sneakers are a must.  And a few simple accessories make me feel less like a soccer mom and more like girl.

Summer Style- From Polyvore to Real Life #2

Back to normal life…
Here’s what I wore to kick off the library’s summer reading program with a visit from Dan Wardell from IPTV.  He is a celebrity to the children here.  Suddenly my oldest thinks he is too cool for this sort of activity.  Which makes me feel OLD.
Although it was pouring outside, we also celebrated my mother’s birthday with a special meal and a rousing game of Crazy 8, which the kids loved.
It’s days like yesterday that remind me of how another year is to be celebrated and how lucky I am to have my mother in my life.

TV Series- Friends- Rachel Green

Everyone’s favorite TV show, Friends has still yet to be challenged in its popularity.  I think it’s  a wonder as to why it was such a hit.  Was it because so many experience that period of their life where they aren’t married with a family and single and dating?  Or because so much of the time friends are more like family than family?  Or maybe it was simply because people were crazy for the on again, off again relationship between Ross and Rachel.
Rachel’s style evolved over the years but one thing was certain.  The girl appreciated fashion. And she loved simple, understated clothes in neutrals with not a lot of showy accessories.
I think many of you can relate to her style.  While this outfit may seem a little flat or stuffy, you have to remember it is missing one very important accessory- her hair.

Spring Break- Sweet Ride

I hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather, wherever you go.  I’m hankering for a bike ride myself right about now, but with the pile of snow we’re due, that ain’t gonna happen.
So I’ll fantasize about doing it over spring break, maybe with the kiddos.  Maybe just with the hubby, you know, picnic style.
Wear something casual but with a little kick- like these printed shorts.
I ask you, how cute is that mint bike?!

Spring Trends- Globe Trotter

My last spring trend is all about traveling the world, for clothing patterns that is.  Tribal, oriental, ethnic, you name it, it is out there.  And it can be a lot of fun to wear!  Many of these prints are pretty large, so keep what you pair them with simple- read solids.
Another trend for spring is outrageous sunglasses.  Have you ever wanted a really “out there” pair?  Now is the time to try it without feeling like Elton John circa 1970.  You can find them in all the classic shapes, so don your favorite, and see the world!
