Spring Fever

I am so over the cloudy days around here.  I mean, day number eight or something with no end in sight!  But the rain also makes me feel like getting my hands dirty in a garden and watching things grow.  Which translates to planting some potted plants and watching them slowly die in the summer sun.  I do not have a green thumb.  I have even managed to kill a succulent.  It can be done!  (They don’t like the heat from the fireplace much.  Just FYI.)

I would like to continue my spring trends post.  And I can’t believe how much the late 70s/early 80s are in this season.  I mean, most of the dresses look like prom dresses from that era- ruffles, cotton dresses with floral patterns and romantic little details.  You know very similar to this one-

Suddenly I’m smelling baby oil on sunburned skin and I have an overwhelming desire to break out the Doctor Scholl’s slides with the wooden bottoms.  I am totally dating myself here but I can remember when ladies used to deep condition their hair with mayo. And I would be playing dress up in some old flouncy dress (just like the ones on trend for spring) and some wooden clogs.  Ah, the early 80s were a good time!

I guess these trends are bringing me back to my childhood and not in an utterly disgusting kind of way- like the late 80s, early 90s.  I have had some time to miss them.

Here are a few fun options for spring-

Are you seeing the pattern here?  All I can say is, wow, girly, feminine looks are really back. My inner hippie is loving this as I think the boho trend is pushing most of these looks.  But there is something so nostalgic and familiar about this trend.

And for those of you born in the 90s or above, I’m sure this is exciting as it’s probably your first time through! 🙂

Spring Au Naturel

Spring is here!  And thank goodness!!  What’s in store for your spring wardrobe?  I have a few ideas.  First up, let’s find you a new pair of shoes.  Anyone for a trip to Target?

Here are some beauties that I love-

Aren’t these lovely ladies?  What’s the theme?  They are all nudes.  I love a nude shoe and the options out this spring are so tempting.  Laser cutouts, mules, peep-toe booties and all manner of cut-outs just spring BUY ME for spring!

These shoes- flats, booties, mules- whichever option you choose are your LBD of the shoe world.  You can never go wrong.  You will literally wear these shoes out with how much pavement they’ll see.

Did you spy a pair that you love?  My questions is- how many is too many?

Spring Forward 2016, Look Five

I hope I’ve given you some ideas on what to be shopping for this spring.  Here’s the last outfit in this little spring collection.

This last look is for when the spring turns warmer because these little rompers are everywhere!  While this one might be a little bare as presented on the model, I paired it with a cute little bralette that is meant to be another layer.  I also topped it with a cardigan to cover up in that’s actually longer than the romper because of the fringe.  This is a look that goes against what your mama taught you.  But it’s a trend no less.  I kept the accessories earthy and simple.

And those are my five looks for a Bohemian spring. I’ll be excited to see what you’ll be wearing!

Spring Forward 2016, Look Four

This is a date night look.  Pair a pretty little Bohemian dress with some flirty little add ons.  I especially like these shoes that will go with many different looks.  And the bag reminds me of something my grandmother would have carried.  Don’t forget to make each wrist sparkle a little with some great bracelets.

Spring Forward 2016, Look Three

Need a break from jeans but not ready yet for shorts?  Don’t forget the easy style of the maxi skirt.  Last year’s floppy hat will still get some wear this spring and so will those neutral boots that you wore all winter (since it’s still not quite sandal weather outside).

Spring Forward 2016, Look Two

Another day, another spring look!  This one has a mix of styles, Bohemian, paired with some Hunter boots just in case of mud and a touch of preppy with the emerald green blouse.

Fringe is still really hot this season and you’ll find it on just about everything from shoes to bags to tops.  It captures my inner hippie.  Plus it’s fun to wear!

Spring Forward 2016- Look One

“I might even take a wild, boyish fling at writing,” says Paul Varjak from Breakfast at Tiffanys.  (If you haven’t seen that movie, put it on your must watch list for old movie night.)
I realize my productivity with this blog has lapsed but I think things are starting to come round!  I had a teething baby to wean and so many a day I’ve spent rocking a crabby baby.  I know I’ll miss those days all too soon!
Now I’m seeing the light at the tunnel though, probably just in time for the kids to get out of school and create a whole new set of challenges.  Meanwhile, let’s think about spring.  My kiddos have been out of school for break this week and it has me thinking about new spring fashion trends!
Here’s day one-
spring forward 1

Spring Forward 2016

The theme for my looks this week is definitely going to have a Bohemian influence because that look is everywhere!  And I love it.
I cannot believe I’m saying this but guess what’s big for spring…chokers.  Yes, it is 1992 and you’re pairing them with your bodysuit.  Wha????  Yes chokers.  You can blame this fashion trend from the boho look that is sweeping through stores and my closet.  While I will be a part of this trend, I will reserve wearing my choker for junking trips and nights out dancing.  I probably won’t be sporting it on the playground.  But kudos to you if you do!
A few other trends in this look are the flowy wrap blouse, the peeptoe booties, and the round sunglasses (I love those!).  Prints are big for spring.  So be on the lookout for some new patterned tops when you’re out shopping!

Red Tutip” by panuruangjan

Incase you missed it, you can read about our trip to Disney on the Real Housewives of Eastern Iowa’s blog.  Some things I would add:

1)  I am can now give you helpful tips on visiting Disney.

2)  Laying by the pool in February is one of the best things ever.

And I also have spring fever.  Returning to a pile of snow and school cancellations due to snowstorms is painful.  I finally took down all of my evergreen decor, minus the front porch because who wants to be outside in this weather?

My house feels naked.  And I have the desire to throw away everything I own and start over.  Does anyone else have this feeling?  I think it’s spring fever.

I have also decided our home needs about six more closets.  The sad part is I’ve been going through each room in our home since Christmas trying to clear out “stuff” and get rid of our clutter.  I’m not sure how they had a family of six in a small cabin in the woods. Maybe I should call this blog post cabin fever instead of spring fever.  Clearly I know where they came up with that saying!

Here are my remedies for stir craziness:

1) Shopping

a) because it is the cure-all for everything and

b) because something new might cheer this place up

2) Purging- it’s time to get nasty with those things that come with guilty (inherited), were presents (guilt again) or you haven’t used in a year

3) Paint- because in my world it is also the cure-all for everything

May I take you along on all of these adventures with me.  Are you ready?

Q&A- Destination Arizona

I received the following question-
Holly-
I am going to Arizona with my family for spring break. We’re flying there and I’m hoping to fit our whole family of five into one suitcase.  So I can’t take much.  Can you help me with some outfit ideas and what to pack? We’ll be doing lots of family activities and also will hopefully have a few dates nights including an Alan Jackson concert.
Thanks!
Meghan
Thank you for your question Meghan!
I too am taking a trip for spring break and am trying to pack light.   More on that later this week.
I tried to combine a few things for you in the same color palette so that they could be mix and match.  The key is to look for pieces that have pattern and some that are solid so you get the strongest outfit combinations from them.
You’re gonna need your boots for the concert so I recommend wearing them on the plane to save room in the suitcase.  And potentially the jean jacket as well.  You could also include a scarf for warmth instead of the jean jacket or wear both if you wish!
I like the idea of a sundress and a maxi skirt.  You can wear your jean jacket over the top of the dress.  You can also pair this white eyelet top with the maxi skirt tucked in with the belt.  The longer tunic length of the tshirt can be worn with leggings or tucked in to the maxi skirt.
Don’t forget some fun sandals and your swimsuit!  Oh, and a pretty carry on!
I hope you have a great time!

Spring Jackets for Moms

Spring Jackets for Moms

Every mom needs an arsenal of jackets for spring.  While you might only have one or two winter coats, spring jackets vary depending on what you’re doing.  I’ve got you covered.

Starting with the top right-

Here is a very trendy jacket that’s sure to up your style anti.  When you’re wearing jeans, this jacket will pop since the olive will surely stand out against the blue and, with the two toned sleeves, add dimension to your outfit.

The second jacket is a faux leather jacket in a soft pastel.  This jacket will take your spring dresses and give them warmth without sacrificing their feminine feel.  And it softens a tough jeans and t-shirt look.

No mom’s wardrobe would be complete without a jean jacket.  I like to wear mine with dresses and pants other than jeans.  Yes, you can wear something other than jeans!

Then there’s the zip up jacket.  Playing with the kids in the park?  You’ll need a warm jacket that can take the activity.  Caution, use sparingly!  It’s easy to never get out of this option!

Probably my favorite spring jacket, the trench.  This baby will take you from the school yard to date night without pause.  Look for one with a hood unless you are Audrey Hepburn and will wear a scarf over your hair in the rain…

Lastly, typical mom wardrobe- the hoodie.  Of course we all need this piece.  But I challenge you to wear some in a print, like these easy stripes.  Look for something that will add visual interest to your outfits.  This hoodie will help create an outfit instead of dull it down.

If you find yourself reaching for the same jacket every morning, choose wisely!  There are many quick and easy options that will take you out and about in style!
