State Fair

I’m embarrassed to say this, but I’ve lived in Iowa for cumulatively twenty years and I’ve never been to the state fair.  Criminal, I know.  I’ve heard so many great things about it.  And I’m excited to attend my first ever this week.
Here’s some ideas on what to wear.  A few outfits for those extreme hot or humid days in the sun. And also for a nite out at a concert.
Oh, and did I mention the boots are optional?  If you’re gonna get a pair of good lookin’ boots, you might as well get your wear out of them!  But don’t be fooled.  Real cowgirl boots don’t look as um, neat? as these.  But it’s fun pretending!

SWL- Class Reunion

Lloyd had a great idea today for a class reunion look- leather pants.  Why leather?  Because it cinches you in like a girdle.  I know you are having a Ross Geller moment right now, worried you’d be stuck in the bathroom applying powder and lotions.  But pair it with a nice loose, bright blouse, some sky high heels and a pair of dangley conversation starter earrings and there’ll be no need for the sweaty panic.
Only a svelte body and irresistible charm.  Perfect.

Q&A- Black Tie Formal for Petites

I received the following question-
I have a convention to attend in California in September with an evening gala.  I was told it is black tie and I will need a dress.  Can you help?  What are the rules?
Thank you for your question!
Black tie can be a dreaded word if you are unfamiliar with the event.  With evolving dress codes (what two people consider business casual can differ greatly), these words can get really tricky. Here’s my decoding:
1)  Black tie is dressy.  It does not mean a sundress in cotton.  It means a formal.
2)  Black tie is dressier than business casual.  Guys need to wear jackets and leave the khakis for another day.  So wear something nicer than a typical jersey work dress.
3)  Black tie is not as dressy as white tie.  White tie means a gown- like you’re headed to the Oscars. Black tie usually means “cocktail” dresses.  Differ to Pretty Woman- she wears the lacy black short dress to meet for drinks.  She wears the red ballgown to the opera.  That’s the difference.
I hope that helps clear up that what black tie means.
Now, knowing that you are on the petite side, I picked a few looks that will accentuate your figure. Petites look great in shorter dresses, showing a little bit of leg will elongate your stature.
Look number one is figure flattering and the color will be an attention-getter.  Red dresses do not need red heels.  Find either a nude heel or a leopard print.  Don’t forget to leave the giant mom bag at home!  Bring a clutch.  Great places to find them are thrift stores, especially if you’ll use it once a year.
The second look is a safe bet.  Black almost always looks more expensive and is something that can be worn to many different occasions.  Simple accessories let the dress stand out but a fun pair of heels can really add a sophisticated element to the LBD.  Black heels would be pretty boring.
The last look is riskier.  A fun color like this light green is ladylike in lace.  Pair it with other ladylike accessories such as pearls.  I paired it with a mint heel in the same color family.  This dress would also look great with silver metallic heels.
I hope this helps!  And you have a great time!

Q&A- Summer Wedding Outfits

I received the following question-
What do I wear to a summer wedding in Colorado?  I need something that is appropriate for a woman in her 40’s.
Thank you for your question!
I put together some ideas for you.  Don’t be afraid of strong color.  It can really make a statement without having to worry much more about your outfit.  If you need something easy to pack (and to dance all night in), try a maxi dress.  With a maxi dress you can get away with wearing flats and going with a more relaxed vibe.  If you are hoping this night will be a fun date night, wear something sexy that has hints of black.  This sheer brown dress has a small high-low skirt, an open neckline and while it appears to expose, you’re still all covered up.
Perfect for those of us who don’t want to be the mother-of-the-bride yet but don’t want to show up in the same dress as the 20 somethings!

From Polyvore to Real Life- #12

This was another outfit that took as much time to throw together as a plate of mac and cheese.  While it wasn’t utterly thoughtless, it was quick.
Step one:
1)  Boil the water
Throw on some cropped pants.
2)  Cook the noodles until soft.
Add some color with a tank.
3)  Drain and mix in milk, butter and the cheese.
Add some denim for sauce.
4)  Stir until blended.
Add a few accessories that mix it all together.

Spring- Child’s Birthday Party

You may think that this isn’t an occasion that you need to worry about how you look or what you’ll wear, but honey, I’m here to tell you that those pictures will live on in infamy.  Years from now, you will gauge how old your child is by the wardrobe you are in and the hairstyle you’re rockin.’
So dress consciously.  Wear something trendy but with a classic twist.  I like the colored jeans (trendy) with the polka dots and other more classic accessories.  From the waist up, it will be pretty hard to narrow down the decade!
And so bring in another new year with joy and happiness.  How lucky are you to have spent ___ years with your little one! Happy Birthday!

TV Series- 90210- Kelly Taylor

We’re talking old school 90210.  You know, Kelly and Dylan.  Dylan and Brenda.  Kelly and Brandon.  Oh the saga of this show.
I bet if I asked you to sing me the rhythm of the opening to that show, you’d know it right away, probably even if you didn’t watch it.  If you simply existed in the 90s, you have heard it.
What would Kelly Taylor wear?  Something preppy with an attitude.  The surprising twist, I could also see this outfit on Brenda.  Maybe Kelly was stealing more than her boyfriends…?

What to Wear with Patterned Heels

They call to you in the department store and they’re too hard to resist.   But then there they are in your closet and you are wondering what you were thinking.  What do these go with? When am I ever going to wear them?
Give those patterned heels purpose-
1)  For a no-brainer, pair them with neutrals.  Dress them up and take them out on the town for a date in a fancy pair of lace pants and a satin shell.
2)  Take them to a client meeting in a sheath dress in a matching tone.
3)  Wear them to a budget meeting with a fit and flare skirt and cardigan.
Leave the regret behind!  Put those heels to work!
