Holiday Looks- Knit Dress

Holiday Looks- Knit Dress

I wore a similar look to this knit dress during the day recently and turned it into a night look as well for our children’s Christmas program at church.

This knit is fine and lightweight. And it’s subzero temperatures. Which explains the leggings….

For day, a very trendy thing to do is pair your dress with… sneakers! It sure made running errands much easier!

For both day and night, it needs a little something to look at around the neck. A blanket scarf is perfect for day and a statement necklace is sassy for night.

Brave the cold, wear the dress!

Athleticwear-Hot Day

I’m not going to lie, every time I leave the house in exercise clothes, I feel like I’m leaving in my pajamas. I just feel like I’m half dressed!

This fall, I am helping coach my daughter’s soccer team and I am dressed far more often in athletic clothes than I normally am and I find myself out of my comfort zone. I know that for most of you, this IS your comfort zone!

It has me reevaluating what I have in my closet to coach in.

Here is one outfit that I’ve put together for coaching gear:

Swim Season- Athletic

Swim Season- Athletic

I recently started a summer workout program at my local pool.  And I am really loving it.

I am not a big swimmer.  A fish, I am not!  If I were thrown overboard, I’d probably drown.  But being in the water is so much fun because it is something out of the ordinary.  I like being weightless and having the resistance of only the water.  The water also awakens all the senses.  You can’t be asleep in a workout in the water!

I highly recommend a water workout if you’re burnt out on regular exercise programs.  After all, staying motivated is half the battle.

What to bring to a water workout?  First, a swimsuit.  You can wear your bikini but I wouldn’t feel most comfortable in one.  The three suits I chose go from your traditional workout suit (with a fun color and some cute piping), to one with a little more coverage for your arms and behind, to one that has total coverage.   Just try to find a suit that you don’t have to tug on every five minutes or worry about losing part of in the water.  J

And of course, you’ll need a towel and your flip flops.

Things to consider:  a watch to count laps.  It’s hard to know how hard you are working in the water.  And I’d really like to find a good waterproof heart rate monitor but I haven’t done enough research yet.  I really hate getting water in my ears, so ear plugs or this ear band would be handy.  And lastly, if you don’t want to wash your hair every day (or are worried about the chlorine and what it’s doing to your hair), a swimming cap may be a necessary object.

Test out your inner fish, give the swim workout a try!

Spring Jackets for Moms

Spring Jackets for Moms

Every mom needs an arsenal of jackets for spring.  While you might only have one or two winter coats, spring jackets vary depending on what you’re doing.  I’ve got you covered.

Starting with the top right-

Here is a very trendy jacket that’s sure to up your style anti.  When you’re wearing jeans, this jacket will pop since the olive will surely stand out against the blue and, with the two toned sleeves, add dimension to your outfit.

The second jacket is a faux leather jacket in a soft pastel.  This jacket will take your spring dresses and give them warmth without sacrificing their feminine feel.  And it softens a tough jeans and t-shirt look.

No mom’s wardrobe would be complete without a jean jacket.  I like to wear mine with dresses and pants other than jeans.  Yes, you can wear something other than jeans!

Then there’s the zip up jacket.  Playing with the kids in the park?  You’ll need a warm jacket that can take the activity.  Caution, use sparingly!  It’s easy to never get out of this option!

Probably my favorite spring jacket, the trench.  This baby will take you from the school yard to date night without pause.  Look for one with a hood unless you are Audrey Hepburn and will wear a scarf over your hair in the rain…

Lastly, typical mom wardrobe- the hoodie.  Of course we all need this piece.  But I challenge you to wear some in a print, like these easy stripes.  Look for something that will add visual interest to your outfits.  This hoodie will help create an outfit instead of dull it down.

If you find yourself reaching for the same jacket every morning, choose wisely!  There are many quick and easy options that will take you out and about in style!

Soccer Mom

Soccer Mom

Today certainly hasn’t gone as planned.  After getting the kids off to school,  I found myself phoneless.  Which is a weird feeling.  I was thankful that we still had our landline or I would have felt cut off from the world.  Drat technology anyway!

Instead of my normal routine, I had to make an emergency trip to town to fix said phone.  And in the process, guess what color I ended up dressing in…gray.  Gray like the skies have been for days.

So I color failed today.  And it got me to thinking about how to reset and prepare for what may be ahead for the rest of the week.

One area that I find myself struggling with is soccer.   What should a soccer mom wear?  Clearly no one wants to be the mom on the sidelines in sweatpants or worse…pajama pants.  Please no!  But with Iowa springs, one is never sure what the temperature will be on the soccer fields.  What can seem nice can be quickly deemed miserable on the sidelines of a game.

So here are a few ideas for some colorful soccer mom outfits.  Nothing elaborate.  So when you’re rushing out the door on Saturday morning and need some quick and easy options you won’t end up gray and miserable.  That will just be the sky.

Pool Honey

For my last winter workout, I’m going with something really wintery… swimming!  Indoors, that is.  Hopefully you have access to one somewhere.

Swimming can be a great workout, whether you’re doing laps or water aerobics.  Serious calories are burned, and your joints are very happy.

Start with a suit that will stay put but still has some style.  And dig out the flip flops from your summer footwear.  Stay warm with a cover-up but don’t forget the towel!  Goggles and swim cap, optional.

Here it is-

Spinning

Have you tried spinning?  I have to admit I was a little leery when I first signed up.  I do enjoy a good bike ride but I’m just not a distance rider.   So I was concerned that I may not enjoy it.

I’m so glad I tried it!  It takes a while to get used to sitting on the bike.  Read- your bum is going to be sore!!   But eventually that goes away.  I also experienced knee pain until I figured out that my bike’s seat wasn’t up high enough.  So good bike position is important.

I encourage you to not be intimidated by the bike.  It really is a great cardio workout.  Forty minutes on the bike goes so quickly and the best part, no one is blocks ahead of you!  Stationary bikes mean you do what you can and don’t have to be at the same level as your neighbor.

Here’s what to wear-

Skater Chic

Did anyone watch the Golden Globes last night?  So exciting for awards season to be here!

I have to admit, I didn’t watch it.  (I’m really mostly bummed that I missed Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.) And I missed last night’s episode of Downton Abbey.  So I have some catching up to do.  I would have to say that my best dressed goes to…Cate Blanchett.  I can’t help it.  She just radiates movie star.

That said.  Here is a little activity that I did participate in yesterday.  I took the kids ice skating.  And it was great exercise!  Especially when you are balancing a three year old!

Going On a Trip?

Going on a trip?  Who wouldn’t want to with these unbearable temps.  Let me help you pack!  And for the rest of us suckers who have to sit under a heat lamp and pretend we’re somewhere tropical, we’ll have a vacation through you.

For starters, you’ll need a great suit.  I won’t pretend to know what hot little number you’re drooling over right now but I’ll give you a bunch of options that look beach ready to me.

Eek!  The thought of putting one on right now is completely frightening!  But boy, I would do it if it meant the temperatures were balmy!
