Spring Fever

I am so over the cloudy days around here.  I mean, day number eight or something with no end in sight!  But the rain also makes me feel like getting my hands dirty in a garden and watching things grow.  Which translates to planting some potted plants and watching them slowly die in the summer sun.  I do not have a green thumb.  I have even managed to kill a succulent.  It can be done!  (They don’t like the heat from the fireplace much.  Just FYI.)

I would like to continue my spring trends post.  And I can’t believe how much the late 70s/early 80s are in this season.  I mean, most of the dresses look like prom dresses from that era- ruffles, cotton dresses with floral patterns and romantic little details.  You know very similar to this one-

Suddenly I’m smelling baby oil on sunburned skin and I have an overwhelming desire to break out the Doctor Scholl’s slides with the wooden bottoms.  I am totally dating myself here but I can remember when ladies used to deep condition their hair with mayo. And I would be playing dress up in some old flouncy dress (just like the ones on trend for spring) and some wooden clogs.  Ah, the early 80s were a good time!

I guess these trends are bringing me back to my childhood and not in an utterly disgusting kind of way- like the late 80s, early 90s.  I have had some time to miss them.

Here are a few fun options for spring-

Women’s Crochet Yoke Shift Dress by Xhilaration from Target, $24.99 $24.99

Women’s Maxi Dress Petal Pink by Xhilaration from Target, $32.99 $32.99

Women’s Floral Print Maxi Dress by Mossimo from Target, $29.99 $29.99

Are you seeing the pattern here?  All I can say is, wow, girly, feminine looks are really back. My inner hippie is loving this as I think the boho trend is pushing most of these looks.  But there is something so nostalgic and familiar about this trend.

And for those of you born in the 90s or above, I’m sure this is exciting as it’s probably your first time through! 🙂

Spring Au Naturel

Spring is here!  And thank goodness!!  What’s in store for your spring wardrobe?  I have a few ideas.  First up, let’s find you a new pair of shoes.  Anyone for a trip to Target?

Here are some beauties that I love-

Aren’t these lovely ladies?  What’s the theme?  They are all nudes.  I love a nude shoe and the options out this spring are so tempting.  Laser cutouts, mules, peep-toe booties and all manner of cut-outs just spring BUY ME for spring!

These shoes- flats, booties, mules- whichever option you choose are your LBD of the shoe world.  You can never go wrong.  You will literally wear these shoes out with how much pavement they’ll see.

Did you spy a pair that you love?  My questions is- how many is too many?

Spring Forward 2016, Look Three

Need a break from jeans but not ready yet for shorts?  Don’t forget the easy style of the maxi skirt.  Last year’s floppy hat will still get some wear this spring and so will those neutral boots that you wore all winter (since it’s still not quite sandal weather outside).

Another day, another spring look!  This one has a mix of styles, Bohemian, paired with some Hunter boots just in case of mud and a touch of preppy with the emerald green blouse.

Fringe is still really hot this season and you’ll find it on just about everything from shoes to bags to tops.  It captures my inner hippie.  Plus it’s fun to wear!

Spring Trends 2014- Cropped Jackets

Our final spring trend- cropped jackets.  These can really be tricky for us moms who may not want to delve into anything that contains the word “cropped.”  But I assure you, the jackets I’ve added in today’s look would be easy additions.

Clearly, I am not referring to anything in the juniors department.  Their version of cropped is going to be more drastic than anything we’d want to try.

I’ve created two work outfits and one with a hipster vibe.  The crop has to hit where you’re comfortable and that means that you don’t have to show anything you don’t want to.  The first and the last looks let your t-shirt and blouse do the heavy work and conceal your tummy.

While it is hard to tell in this layout, the middle outfit has a high-waisted skirt.  With a fitted tank or shell underneath, I would wear this jacket unzipped to let more of the skirt with such a pretty print show.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week of spring fashion.  I know it’s hard to imagine all the snow away.  One of these days…it will happen!

Spring Trends 2014- Wide Leg Pants

Two more spring trends to go!

Today’s trend keeps coming and going- especially during spring and fall.  In the fall, you’ll see this trend surface in denim to create a bohemian look.  I think designers are trying to take a break from the skinny jean look and mix it up a little.  I’d love to say these would be a great “I’m feeling bloated” pants option but I feel they really aren’t made for ladies like me who have thicker thighs.  This type of pant looks best on women with thinner, longer legs.  However, if these pants are slightly boot cut (thinner on the thighs), then they are more flattering for us none skinny legged ladies.

These pants remind me of Diane Keaton in Annie Hall.  The look is menswear turns feminine and it looks great on women with very little curve. Picture just about anything Meg Ryan would wear.

Pair with these pants with something simple up top.  Keep it sleek.  You don’t want wide pants and a top with a bunch of volume.  Your shoes are very important.  You should NOT wear ballet flats with these pants.  They need height and a sturdy heel.

Here are three looks to inspire you. I’m particularly in love with the sailor pants.  What a great spring look!

Spring Trends 2014- Collarless Jackets

Jackets this spring are big, which makes sense because most of us have been hiding behind a bulky coat all winter.  One of the trends in jackets is a collarless style.

This looks is very sleek and modern.  It reminds me greatly of the Oscar gown Gwyneth Paltrow wore with the cape.  Perhaps this look is a trickle down from that night?

Spring Trends 2014- Collarless Jackets

Anywho, here are a few styles, all worn with heels.  Because I’m kind of missing my heels. Will spring ever arrive?

A collarless jacket is also a great platform for necklaces.  You can either go classic with a chunky short necklace (I’m really envisioning a chain for some reason) or with a longer jacket choose a longer necklace.

Check them out.  They will be a great wardrobe update!

Spring Trends 2014- Pink Jeans

Everyone knows pastels equate spring. But this year, you are going to see much more pink than usual.  Pink is a color that looks great on everyone and don’t save it for the little girls.

A big trend for spring will be pink jeans.  Much like the cobalt jeans and the mint jeans of previous seasons, pink will be showing up on denim near you.  Use them as you would your white jeans, as a break from the blue denim and to add another dimension to your closet.

Here are three pairs that I dressed up for you.  The first look is for anywhere you need to go and look presentable- conferences, story time at your library; the second look is mommy on the go- run errands, get groceries; and the last look is date night or girl’s night out.   I love the booties with the top.  It’s a little bit romantic and a little bit rock and roll.

Embrace the pink.  Pink is powerful!

Spring Trends 2014- Button Ups

Day two spring trends.  And this one is just a carryover from winter, button downs!  And really buttons in general are everywhere.  A big trend this spring!

While you’ve been mainly wearing a ton of plaid flannel shirts and buffalo checks, it’s time to lighten up! Spring is all about bright colors, Burberry-inspired plaid and fun prints.

In the looks below, I added in a few sweaters to compliment your button ups in case you need another layer.  I also gave you some footwear ideas and don’t forget these button downs pair greatly with statement necklaces!

Spring Trends 2014- Easy Skirts

Spring Trends 2014- Easy Skirts

Let’s think spring!!

The meaning of spring fashion is a little different here in the Midwest.  While most people think spring equates delicate shoes, blouses and capris, we know better.  In typical recent fashion, our climates go from 20 degrees to 65 without warning.  There are very few days without muddy, dirty snowy slush and windy cold rains.  And then all the sudden its summer and you need a tank top because you’ll sweat to death.

What I’m trying to say is that there is no gradual springiness of late.  The days were you feel the tulips popping out of the snow and robins singing.  What we really have our mild winter days and then summer.

So I’m going to dress us for those.  Because let’s be real.  If we lived in LA, we wouldn’t have to worry so much about whether or not that “spring” coat is really going to keep us warm.  It was just for show anyway.

I am also going to try to focus as I always do on trends that I would wear.  You won’t see me telling you to plunk down your money on some crazy runway look- just easy ideas to consider for your spring wardrobe.

And so, number one!  Easy skirts.  We have run the gamut lately with easy skirts.  First was the skater skirt, then the maxi.  While both are still hot items, this year is a tea-length.  It is very 1950s casual.  I like to think of them as ladies aid skirts.  They are prim and proper, but sweet and forgiving- and meant to be worn to work in.  So don’t save them only for church or a girl’s luncheon!  Wear one to a picnic or a meeting or a movie out.  Give your legs and tush a break from the pencils and move again!

You can see how I styled mine.  I chose a poppy color because it always reminds me of spring.  And I paired it with a simple blouse and sweater.  I’m still in love with a poppy lip color and I like how the aviators keep the look from being too vintage.

Is this a spring trend you are willing to try?
